There are nearly 1800 students in St. Lucie County Public Schools who are classified as homeless. This includes couch surfing, people who are living in a place not meant for human habitation, in an emergency shelter, or in transitional housing. On Saturday, May 18th Women United, an affinity group of United Way of St. Lucie County, packed 542 backpacks with toiletries that consist of travel sized shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and new underwear for homeless children in St. Lucie County Public Schools.
There were over 40 volunteers that participated in this event at the St. Lucie County Logistics Center in Fort Pierce. The items were donated from various people and organizations in the community. The goal is to distribute the backpacks filled with toiletries to the homeless students in St. Lucie Public Schools. On behalf of United Way of St. Lucie County and Women United we appreciate everyone who donated their time, talent and treasures to help make this a successful initiative.
Women United is a way for United Way to bring women together to contribute their personal passions, best ideas, and unique strengths to the mission of building stronger communities. The events consist of recruitment mixers, Lunch and Learns, and volunteer opportunities to engage the women in the community. Currently, the group is focused on a wide range of community issues such as children’s mental health, children’s homelessness, and disaster relief. The next Lunch and Learn is on June 14th at 11:30 a.m. on disaster preparedness located at St. Lucie County Emergency Operations Center: 15305 West Midway Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34983 be sure to register on our website at UnitedWaySLC.org.
